Kashmir in winter: snow, skiing and what to expect
Winter is a completely different Kashmir. Fewer visitors, snow-covered gardens, and Gulmarg turned into a ski resort.
What is open
- Srinagar, Dal Lake and the Mughal Gardens - under snow but accessible
- Gulmarg - the main winter destination, gondola running most days
- Pahalgam - open, very quiet, sometimes snow-bound
- Sonamarg and higher roads - usually closed
Skiing in Gulmarg
Gulmarg has genuine off-piste terrain, a long season from December to March, and gondola access to Apharwat at 4,000 m. Beginners can take lessons on the lower slopes. Our Winter in Gulmarg ski week is built around it, and the 4-night winter package is a shorter taste.
How to prepare
- Heavy insulated jacket, thermals, gloves, woollen cap, waterproof boots
- Expect occasional flight delays and road closures after heavy snow - keep a buffer day
- Carry a postpaid SIM; keep devices warm so batteries last
Best weeks
Mid-January to mid-February for the most reliable snow.
