Four nights covers the classic Srinagar-Gulmarg-Pahalgam circuit. Five to six nights lets you add Sonamarg and slow the pace. Seven or more opens up offbeat valleys like Doodhpathri, Yusmarg or Gurez.

Postpaid mobile connections from any Indian operator work across the valley. Prepaid SIMs from outside J&K often do not, so carry at least one postpaid number. Hotels and houseboats generally have Wi-Fi.

Even in summer, carry a light jacket for Gulmarg and Sonamarg mornings. October onwards you need proper warm layers, and in winter a heavy coat, gloves, a woollen cap and waterproof shoes. Sunscreen and sunglasses matter year-round at altitude.
